HERP CONSERVATION GHANA TEAM UNCOVERS ANOTHER ENDANGERED FROG IN THE ONEPONE ENDANGERED SPECIES REFUGE (OESR)

Herp Conservation Ghana field team have just uncovered another endangered frog (Amnirana occidentalis) at the Onepone Endangered Species Refuge, a recently established protected area in the Togo-Volta Highlands, Ghana. This is the first time this endangered frog has been recorded in this part of the country (South Eastern Ghana). The species was originally discovered in Ivory Coast and has been recorded in few sites in South Western Ghana, making this finding significant range extension for this species.
What does this finding mean?
- This shows how little we still know about amphibians in Ghana despite the fact that they are very threatened.
- The newly established Onepone Endangered Species Refuge (OESR) and adjoining areas habour an incredible diversity which is still waiting to be discovered.
